Watermelon: High content of lycopene

Study shows that watermelons has numerous health benefits. The red variety of watermelon contains high concentrations of Lycopene, an anti-oxidant that helps to reduce the risk of many diseases.

Cranberry juice is good for urinary tract infection

The scientific name for cranberry plant is Vaccinium macrocarpon. Cranberries, blueberries, and Concord grapes are the only 3 fruits that are native to the United States and Canada.

Native Americans were the first to use cranberries for their medicinal properties. Cranberries were used for a variety of complaints, including blood disorders, stomach ailments, liver problems, and fever.

Urinary tract infections are caused by microorganisms, mainly Gram-negative bacteria. Indeed, Escherichia coli (E. coli) account for most cases. Treatment usually involves antibio-tics, and recurrence is a major concern.

The plant and heath benefits of dewberries

Dewberries belong to the same genus as raspberries. This is a deciduous shrub of Europe, Orient and northern Asia growing to 0.2m by 1m. The fruit is small with few grains but these are large, juicy, black, with a fine, glaucous bloom and are very agreeably acid.

Dewberry has a low, vine-like growth habit and rarely reaches heights greater than 2 feet. Dewberry commonly has slender thorns with red hairs on the stem. Plants spread laterally from buds on lateral roots and rooting of shoot tips. Birds eat the berries and disperse seeds widely.

The flowers, which bloom in June, are white to pinkish in colour and develop into bright red, raspberry-like fruit in August.

The fruit is commonly used for a treatment for diarrhea and dysentery. Combination of the roots is treatment for coughs and also fevers.

Some people recommend cutting the berry on the stem and freezing it, to be used like a cherry in a drink. The dewberry has a delicious flavor and is considered to be superior to blackcurrants though the fruit is rather small and consists of just a few drupes. The fruit can be used for jellies, cold drinks, tea, and also salads. The fresh or dried leaves are used as a tea substitute.

Watermelon juice

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) is a member of the Cucurbitaceae family of gourds and is related to the cucumber, squash, and pumpkin. Watermelon flesh is ~91% water by weight.

Watermelon juice, as a beverage, is found almost exclusively as an over-the-counter drink made by hand from the pink flesh of the watermelon fruit. While, in some cultures such as those of Mexico and India, such watermelon drinks are popular, in the United States and elsewhere, watermelon juice drinks are rare, with commercially available packaged watermelon juice drinks virtually unknown.

Watermelon is rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B, amino acid and also carotenoid lycopene. The red flesh of watermelon contains some vitamin A. What are flavonoids?

Flavonoids are a large family of widely distributed plant substances formerly designated as vitamin F. They are a subgroup of a larger class of molecules called phenols. These compounds are often pigments and occur in high concentrations in all fruits, especially citrus fruits; purple berries and apples; as well as in vegetables, including onions; tea; and whole grains.

Many flavonoids occur as glycosides in foods, and both flavonoids structure and the type of sugar moiety determine their primary site of absorption.

Flavonoids are found to inhibit oxidation and decrease platelet aggregation in vitro. This observation has stimulated a number of epidemiologic studies to examine the relationship between dietary intake of flavones and risk of CHD.


Many experts suspect that the French are less vulnerable to heart disease because they consume more red wine. Presumably the protective effect is the result of the flavonoids in red wine, which protect against oxidative damage from LDL cholesterol.

Polyphenol in pomegranate juice

Edible parts of pomegranate fruits (about 50% o total fruit weight) comprise 80% juice and 20% seeds. Fresh juice contains 85% moisture, 10% total sugars, 1.5% pectin, ascorbic acid, polyphenols and flavonoids.

Polyphenols are relevant constituents regarding the organoleptic properties of pomegranate arils and juice as they are responsible for the distinctive red pigmentation and provide mild astringency that is characteristics of pomegranate flavor.


The most important product derived from the pomegranate is its juice. The juice obtained from these arils contains anthocyanins (delphinidin, cyanidin, and pelargonidin 3-glucosides and 3.5 glucosides), ellargic acid glycosides (ellagic acid glucoside, arabinoside and rhamnoside), free ellagic acid, ellagitannins (several punicalagin, isomers, punicalin and some punicalagin polymeric forms) and gallotannins.

Health benefits of date palm

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L) belongs to the family Arecaceae that includes 200 genera; genus Phoenix contains 12 of the 1500 species that belong to the date palm family.

Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus): the health benefits

Bilberry is often referred to as the European blueberry and has long been eaten in jams, pies, cobblers and cakes.

Carambola
