Furanocoumarins in citrus fruit

The furocoumarins or furanocoumarins, more commonly known as psoralens, are secondary metabolites commonly found in citrus plants. They are pharmacologic agents and these molecules are allelochemical compounds in plants that have controversial effects on humans, such as phototoxicity and the commonly described interactions with drugs, referred to as the “grapefruit juice effect”.

Citrus plants are able to produce defense compounds such furanocoumarins to cope with herbivorous insects and pathogens. In humans, these chemical compounds are strong photosensitizers and can interact with medications, leading to the “grapefruit juice effect”.

Furanocoumarins can block an enzyme produced by the liver and intestines to break down certain medications in the body. Without this enzymatic activity, levels of these medications can grow to harmful, even toxic, levels.

Citrus peel contains larger diversity and higher concentrations of furanocoumarin than the pulp of the same fruits. Grapefruit is not the only rich in furanocoumarins here. Pomelos (a hybrid between an orange and an Asian fruit called Citrus maxima) also contain furanocoumarins, as do Seville oranges (used in marmalades) and limes. Sweet oranges, such as navel and Valencia, do not contain furanocoumarins.

The major furanocoumarins found in grapefruits include bergamottin, epoxybergamottin, and 6′,7′-dihydroxybergamottin.

Furanocoumarins represent a class of photosensitizers whose use level is likely to be restricted to 1 ppm in cosmetic products by the EU. Furanocoumarins are a therapeutically important subtype and have various clinical applications. They have been used in folk medicine for a long time. The first furanocoumarin, 5-methoxypsoralen, was isolated in 1838 by Kalbrunner from bergamot oil.

Grapefruit juice help to lower risk from many diseases and also help to reduce weight. Grapefruit also provides naringin, a flavonoid in the flavanone subclass that may have cardiovascular benefits. In animal studies, naringin has been reported to have beneficial effects on neuro-inflammation, blood lipids, and bone mineral content.

History and origin of pomelo

The origin of the pomelo was almost certainly in the region of Malaysia and Indonesia. The pomelo also grew wild in part of China. It has been gathered and cultivated by the Chinese for thousands of years.

In Yu Kung manuscript it was said that the larger pomelo was among the tributes ‘wrapped in an embroidered silk scarf at the bottom of a basket’ offered to the Emperor Tayun who reigned from 2205 to 2197 BC.

The pomelo was the ancestors of the grapefruit. The word pomelo is related to the Dutch pampelmoose, and the French pamplemousse (grapefruit), and the French pomme (apple).

The orange and pomelo both took the Silk Road and the path trodden by Chinese medicine to Europe through the East, each going at its own pace.

In the mid-17th century the pomelo was introduced to the W. Indies, where citrus cultivation was already well established.

The pomelo spread to other Caribbean islands, and in 1707 British traveller Hans Sloane remarked that pomelos from Barbados tasted better than those from Jamaica.

Grapefruit derived its name as fruits are borne in clusters like grapes. Among citrus fruits grown in the tropics, grapefruits have the highest quality and are the best with the commercial possibilities as fresh fruits. 

The quality of grapefruit, as well as the quaintly, is the ultimate result of fruit setting, growth, development and ripening of the fruit on the tree.

Quality experts stated that grapefruit of good quality should have the following characteristics
*A relatively thin peel
*Regular segment
*High quantity of juice
*Tender flesh
*Absence of bitterness
*A ration of soluble solids and acid that would give a tart, sweet taste.

Grapefruit of good quality is firm, but springy to the touch, well shaped and heavy for itws size – the heavier the fruit, the better.

While other experts defined good quality grapefruit as being of normal shape, and appearance common to the variety in question, sound, smooth, thin peel, fine textures with a minimum of rag, juicy, right in flavor, even in color and practically free of surface blemishes, pests and disease.

The fruit also should free of abnormal external moisture, excluding condensation following removal from cold storage.

Grapefruit often had skin defects – such as scale, scars, thorn scratches or discoloration - which usually do not affect the eating quality of the fruit.

The grapefruits must have been carefully picked and have reached an appropriate degree of development and ripeness in accordance with criteria proper to the variety and/or commercial type and to the area in which they are grown.

History of grapefruit

The grapefruit’s scientific name gives away its association with the sun-drenched islands of the Caribbean: Citrus paradis.

The story of the grapefruit begins in southeastern China and Japans with its nearest relative the shaddock or pummelo.

The shaddock was named for Captain Shaddock, an English ship commander of an East Indian ship who brought the seeds of the large fruit from China to Barbados during the seventeenth century.

Trees of it were growing there in 1687 during the visit of Hans Sloane to Barbados, who was in the island in that year. Hans Sloane was a physician and naturalist.

Griffith Hughes in 1750 first mentioned grapefruit as being found in Barbados and Patrick Browne reported it from Jamaica under the names ‘forbidden fruit’ and ‘smaller shaddock’.

The first recorded use of the word ‘grapefruit’ was by John Lunan in 1814, who also assumed it to be a variety of the pummelo or shaddock.

About 1809 a Spanish nobleman Don Philippe, migrated to Florida and first planting grapefruit in the United States.

The originally grapefruit varieties planted in Florida were the seedy types such as the Duncan. In 1895 the March Seedless was introduced; since then both the seedless as well as the seedy varieties have been planted extensively.

Grapefruit

The grapefruit is so named because John Luman recorded this name in 1814 in his Hortus Jamaicensis ‘on account of its resemblance in flavor to the grape.’

About 1809, a Spanish nobleman, ‘Don Philippe’ migrated to Florida and settled near Green Springs. He was said to have brought grapefruit seeds with him and from them, to have developed a small grove, the first grapefruit planting in the state.

It then became an important crop in the early 1900s, in the southern United States.

There are two types of grapefruit, white and red, differentiated more by the color of their flesh than their skin.

Grapefruit is one of citrus family members. It is an acid fruit, which is highly alkaline in reaction. It is a natural antiseptic for wounds, when used externally.

The yellow also lowered blood pressure but not as much as the red grapefruit.It was found in this study that grapefruit had a better effect in lowering blood pressure than statin drugs.Red grapefruit are extra high in anti-oxidants and these nutrients are able to reduce your trigylcerides: the yellow are not.

Eat the red grapefruit when available and when it is not eat the yellow. Eat at least one - two per day. If you eat ½ just before your meal or drink a glass of fresh grapefruit, you can expect to lose 1 or 2 lbs during the month. By eating 2 grapefruits a day expect to lose more weight.Eating grapefruit has many health benefits, but one other is in controlling your insulin level. Studies have shown that those that eat grapefruits have lower insulin and glucose levels in their blood.

It is believed by researchers that grapefruit enzymes help to control insulin increases that happen after you eat. These enzymes help digest your food better and this results in less nutrients being stored as fat.
